Attic Insulation Installation Guide
Insulating your attic is a great way to improve the comfort of your home, lower energy costs and reduce street noise. But there are a few important things to consider before tackling this project yourself.
First, you’ll need to Gaines County, TX the type and R-Value of the existing insulation in your attic. Use the guidance in the “Know your current level” section above to figure out this number, then head to your local hardware store or home improvement center to buy the materials you’ll need. When buying blown-in fiberglass or cellulose insulation, look for “unfaced” versions with no paper backing (which is better for moisture resistance) and refer to the charts on the bags to determine how many bags you’ll need to reach your target R-Value.
Attic Insulation for Winter: Keep Heat In and Costs Down
When installing blown-in insulation, remember that it needs to remain fluffy to be effective so don’t just cram it in stud bays willy nilly. Also, it’s a good idea to cut around pipes, electrical boxes and other obstacles in the attic before adding the new insulation.
You’ll also need to make sure your attic is vented properly to prevent ice dams, roof leaks and other problems. Most attics have vents along the eaves and soffits that allow moisture to escape, and they should not be blocked. Finally, if you have knob and tube wiring in your attic (a common problem in older homes) you’ll want to contact an electrician before you add any insulation because this kind of wiring is a fire hazard and should be brought up to modern code before it’s touched.
